Folk Dance
Folk Dance covers a wide range of European Folk Dance. These traditional dances, celebrating local culture and heritage, have been preserved and developed over time by communities throughout Europe.
Our Founder Margaret Allenby-Jaffe and her husband Nigel travelled extensively and they produced several books on many aspects of National Dance in various European countries. All of their books are invaluable sources of information for teachers and students, and take pride of place on our bookshelves.
In the 21st century National has a particular relevance, as through its study of the various movement patterns, styles, music, language, historical and geographical backgrounds, it can help to enhance and understanding of other European cultures.
We are keen to include lots of local Yorkshire and Lancashire folk dance, including clogging and step dancing. In Folk Dance classes we also learn about many other styles of English Folk Dance such as Maypole, Morris, Molly, Rapper Sword, Processional and Garland dances.
Folk Dance is a fundamental form of dancing, it is vitally important and brings joy to all ages. It develops a sense of community and awareness of others. Dancers have an opportunity to study traditional dances, costumes, music and customs. Children can enter Folk Dance Studies exams, and then they have the opportunity to prepare projects on any aspect of the chosen countries as well as performing the dances themselves.
Northern Dance Centre, performing as Northern Lights, have had tremendous success in the wider Folk Dance World, gaining the Silver Medal at the World Folk Dance Festival in Palma, Majorca, also winning Gold at the International Eisteddfod, Llangollen, competing against many different countries worldwide.
Folk Dance classes are free of charge and always will be, not only because it is so important to learn, but because it brings people together, encourages people to watch, listen and learn about the world, but mainly because it is so much fun!
